Ticket on Sundays

Chicago almost never tickets an overflowing dumpster on a weekend.

The dumpsters behind restaurants and apartment buildings fill up on Friday night and spill over until the Monday truck comes. The rats eat well all weekend. The City's sanitation inspectors are off.

1.2%

of the tickets Chicago wrote this year for garbage that feeds rats were written on a Saturday or a Sunday. That's 108 out of 8,974.

Why the garbage sits all weekend

The City doesn't collect trash from restaurants, stores, or apartment buildings with five or more units. They have to hire a private hauler, and the Municipal Code only says pickup has to happen "at least once each week" (MCC 7-28-240). So the cheapest legal contract is a weekday one, and from Friday night to Monday morning the container just fills.

Overflow is already illegal. Garbage outside a closed container breaks one section of the code (7-28-260), and garbage kept in a way that feeds rats breaks another (7-28-710). The people who enforce those rules work Monday to Friday, and 93% of their tickets are written between 7 a.m. and 2 p.m. By the time they come down the alley, the truck has been and gone.

On a typical weekend in 2026, inspectors wrote two of these tickets. In the entire city.
